Sky Poker - Brits win Bracelets!

(25/06/2010)

With all of the excitement of the World Cup in South Africa, the World Series of Poker is in an unusual position of playing second-fiddle for some poker fans. If you’re one of those who has been watching Green’s fumbles rather than Akenhead’s folds, this update should be just the tonic.

Incredibly, 24 of the World Series events have already finished, and it’s been a successful time for the Brits with James Dempsey, Richard Ashby and Praz Bansi all having bagged themselves a bracelet. While Ashby has been playing high-stakes online for some time now and Bansi already the owner of a WSOP title, it is Dempsey who has been the doyen of British poker thus far, having won his first bracelet in Event 9, a $ 1,500 Pot Limit Hold’em tournament which carried a $ 197,470 first prize.

Only days later, Dempsey found himself heads-up against Sammy Farha for his chance of a second bracelet in the $ 10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo Championship. Farha is one of the most liked pros on the circuit, made infamous for his loose style of play and willingness to play at the highest possible stakes. He is perhaps the pro who has done the most of the rise of poker’s popularity too – after all, who would have been as interested in the 2003 World Series Main Event result if Moneymaker had lost to him under the gazes of the TV cameras?

Unfortunately for James Dempsey – known to many on the UK circuit as ‘Flushy’ – Farha wasn’t in the mood for coming second this time, eventually ousting Dempsey after an epic 16-hour final table. Farha’s third WSOP bracelet was practically secured when he rivered the nut full house on a Qs-9s-3c-Qc-As board for a monster pot that left Dempsey’s stack – and hopes of a second bracelet – dwindling.

While Dempsey, Bansi and Ashby have all managed to win bracelet for the Brits, there have been a couple of other notable performances from our fellow poker players, too. Neil Channing, the 2008 Irish Champion, almost won his first WSOP title, eventually finishing second in Event 6, a ,000 No Limit Hold’em Shootout. Sam Trickett was another who came painfully close to a maiden victory at the World Series after he came second to Jason DeWitt in the $ 5,000 No Limit Hold’em event midway through the second week.

News away from the Brits has revolved around Tom Dwan who, seemingly following on from an Phil Ivey’s example last year, has taken on some high-stakes prop bets about winning his first (and second) bracelets. The internet superstar is yet to win his first WSOP title, and the pressure is really on for ‘durrrr’ now after he booked in bets with fellow pros rumoured to be at least $ 8 million dollars.

Those opposed to the youngster were certainly quaking in their boots as he reached heads-up stages in only the eleventh event of the Series. As many of those playing in the $ 10,000 Seven Card Stud event craned their necks to see how Dwan progressed, they were ultimately toasting the name of Simon Watt, who might be remembered as the man who cost Dwan not only his first title but a bumper prop bet payday after he finally defeated ‘durrrr’.

Of course, the focal point of the World Series is always the Main Event, and Sky Poker will be sending five winners from our Viva Las Vegas series to make a run at the biggest title of them all. Dan ‘DanTB10’ Brown will also be playing the Main Event after he won his way during the inaugural Total Player competition. You’ll be able to follow their progress right here at Sky Poker, with none other than Tikay headed out to keep them on the right track to the WSOP millions! He’’ll be sending back video clips and interviews too, so make sure you check back to see how the WSOP Six progress.

Ladbrokes Poker - Killarney - 1st to 3rd October 2010

(25/06/2010)

€250,000 Guaranteed Main Event

The Ladbrokes.com Irish Poker Festival will be held once again at the best poker venue in Europe, the Irish National Events Centre (INEC) in Killarney, Co Kerry, Ireland. The INEC is at the heart of a vibrant hotel and leisure complex, which includes the famous Thai Angsana Spa. Ladbrokes online package winners will be staying at the Gleneagle Hotel which is adjacent to the INEC.

This is the 3rd year of Europe’s best value everyman tournament and last year 752 players showed up to battle for the 100k first prize. Englishman and Ladbrokes player Thomas Rolfe took down the 1st prize and the honours list reads Ireland 1 and England 1 so far. 2010 will be absolutely mega with players from all over Europe already booking flights and planning the trip to the home of Irish poker, Killarney.

To find out what happened last year and what you can expect from this year, see our Irish Poker Festival 2009 pages.

This year, the three day Festival will be held from the 1st to 3rd October and the €550 Main Event will once again guarantee all players a whopping €250,000 guaranteed prizepool. Players will start with 15,000 chips, one hour blinds and will earn European ranking points.

We have only one major difference this year and that is the recession busting value of the package. The 2010 event package has everything you expect for €900. This includes the €550 buy in to the Main Event and 3 nights B&B at the Gleneagle hotel.

The Festival also includes two side tournaments, a two day €270+30 tournament Saturday 3rd October and a one day €150+20 tournament on Sunday 4th October. You will also have exclusive access to the Ladbrokes hospitality facilities. Here you will find a games room with pool and darts to help you relax in between all the poker action.

In addition to the poker, the host town of Killarney is synonymous with Irish hospitality offering a great range of night-life associated with Irish music and having the craic! If you have not been to Killarney before, flights from Stansted and Luton to Kerry (KIR) are currently available for as little as £25 each way plus taxes but check online for all the latest offers.

So make sure you don’t miss taking your seat at the biggest poker tournament on the European Poker Circuit and win your Irish Festival Package today.

Sky Poker - Rebuys & Add-ons

(22/06/2010)

REBUY TOURNAMENTS
A rebuy tournament is new to Sky Poker which differs from the regular ‘freeze-out’ tournaments. In most poker tournaments, when you lose all of your chips you have been eliminated from the tournament. This is known as a ‘freeze-out’ tournament.

In a rebuy tournament, you have the opportunity to buy more chips – or ‘rebuy’ – and continue playing in the tournament should you run out of chips, or if your chip stack drops below a predetermined level; E.G. players may be entitled to buy a rebuy if the chip balance drops below 50% of their starting balance. Doing so will see the player gain the number of chips stipulated in the Rebuys & Addons panel, at the cost shown. The cost of the rebuy is taken from the player’s account at the time of purchase, but if the player has insufficient funds, they will be informed that the purchase of the rebuy has been unsuccessful because of this.

Rebuys are only available during a part of the tournament called the ‘rebuy period’. This will be at the beginning of the tournament and can last for a predetermined number of blind levels or length of time – normally until the first break, but can if stipulated be extend into the break. The number of rebuys you can purchase during the rebuy period can vary from one to unlimited; but in all cases the exact number of rebuys available, and the duration of the rebuy period will be displayed in the tournament lobby. If the number of rebuys is restricted to a certain number, you will be informed when you do purchase one, in the rebuy confirmation pop up how many rebuys you have remaining for potential purchase, subject to you meeting the tournaments rebuy criteria and having sufficient funds to purchase the rebuy.

ADD ONS
During a specific time period called ‘add on period’ the players may, depending on its availability, be able to buy an add-on. The add-on will be for a specified amount of chips which is normally equal to the players starting chip balance. The add-on will not automatically be offered to you but will be available, for purchase within the addon time period, irrespective of how many chips you have, it is common for the add on period to be the rebuy tournament’s 1st break period. The cost of the addon is taken from the players account at the time of purchase, but if the player has insufficient funds, they will be informed that the purchase of the addon has been unsuccessful because of this.
